Decking Screws – Everything You Need to Know
Deck screws are specifically designed to secure timber or composite deck boards to structural timber or steel joists. Unlike standard wood screws or nails, decking screws provide superior holding power, corrosion resistance, and long-term durability. While nails may work in some situations, they can rise over time, create hazards, and corrode faster, making screws the better choice for safety and longevity.
Choosing the Right Screw:
The size of your deck doesn’t always determine your fastener choice – provided your framework is stable and correctly spaced. For larger decks or decks built high off the ground, stainless steel decking screws are recommended to accommodate wood movement and reduce corrosion risk.
Decking screws come in different stainless steel grades:

Stainless A4: Acid-proof steel with the highest corrosion resistance (C5). Ideal for pools, jetties, coastal areas, and tropical hardwoods.

Stainless A2: Good corrosion resistance (C4), suitable for decks near lakes or brackish water, as well as railings, fences, and steps.
Board Spacing:
Timber is hygroscopic, meaning it responds to changes in humidity and temperature, causing shrinkage and expansion. To allow for this natural movement, always leave a gap between each decking board. Proper spacing ensures longevity, prevents warping, and accommodates seasonal changes in moisture content.
